HMB45 is a melanoma-related antigen that is present in junctional nevus and blue nevus cells of the skin. It is mainly used for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of malignant melanoma (with or without pigmented cells) and clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue. In the differential diagnosis of malignant melanoma and epithelial carcinoma, the former is often positive for HMB45, S100 and/or Vimentin and negative for cytokeratin (CK), while the opposite is true for the latter.
