CD138 is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed in different differentiation stages of normal lymphocytes, such as B cells, immature B cells and plasma cells. It is also expressed in epithelial cells, embryonic stromal cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells and basement membrane of nerve cells. In some tumors (such as squamous cell carcinoma), the expression of CD138 has a certain correlation with tumor progression and prognosis.
