MyoD1 is a phosphorylated protein with a molecular weight of 45 kDa encoded by the MyoD gene. It is only expressed in embryonic striated muscle cells and not in normal adult striated muscle cells. It is a very sensitive and specific marker for skeletal muscle tumors. It is mainly used in the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma.
