Tubulin refers to the tubulin superfamily of globular proteins, or to a certain member of the tubulin superfamily. α-tubulin and β-tubulin polymerize into microtubules. Microtubules are the main component of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. Microtubules play a role in many basic cellular processes such as mitosis. Microtubule-binding drugs kill cancer cells by inhibiting the activity of microtubules needed for DNA separation and cell division.
