Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), also known as vascular permeability factor in its early days, is a heparin-binding growth factor specific for vascular endothelial cells that can induce angiogenesis in the body. VEGF is a highly conserved homodimer glycoprotein. It specifically binds to a specific combination of three “vascular endothelial growth factor receptors” (VEGFR-1, -2, and -3), acting on vascular endothelial cells to promote vascular endothelial cell proliferation and increase vascular permeability. It plays an important role in the vascularization of tumor tissue and is closely related to tumor growth, invasion and metastasis.
