Vinculin is a membrane cytoskeletal protein and focal adhesion component protein that participates in the connection of integrin adhesion molecules to the actin cytoskeleton. Loss of vinculin affects a range of cellular functions, including interfering with the formation of vinculin complexes and preventing cell adhesion and spreading. Loss of focal adhesions reduces cell extension, thereby reducing stress fiber and focal adhesion formation and inhibiting lamellipodia extension.
