CK4 is a type II cytokeratin that is specifically expressed in mucosa and esophageal epithelial tissue together with CK13. Mutations in the CK4 encoding gene are associated with white spongy nevus on the mucosa, manifesting as leukoplakia of the oral cavity, esophagus, and anus.
