Mucin is a type of glycoprotein mainly composed of mucopolysaccharides. Currently, 9 different Mucin genes have been discovered (Muc-1, 2, 3, 4, 5AC, 5B, 6, 7, 8). Mucins are highly expressed in many adenocarcinomas, including pancreatic, lung, breast, ovarian, colon, and other tissues. Mucins are also overexpressed in lung diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or cystic fibrosis. Muc-5AC and Muc-6 are the first two mucins discovered. Muc-5AC is mainly distributed in superficial mucosal epithelial cells, while Muc-6 is distributed in glandular cells in deep mucosal layers.
